TouchofGod.World - Teaching Your Identity In Christ
The Truth About Generational Curses (Pt.7) (303) – June 21 2025
In 1 Timothy 1:3-4, the Apostle Paul instructs Timothy to "...admonish and charge certain individuals not to teach any different doctrine, 4 Nor to give importance to or occupy themselves with legends (fables, myths) and endless genealogies, which foster and promote useless speculations and questionings." In Titus we see we are to "avoid stupid and foolish controversies and genealogies and dissensions and wrangling about the Law, for they are unprofitable and futile."
This is further proof that the Christian should never attempt to search their ancestry line in attempt to find the root cause of their problem. Doing so is an act of blindness to the truth, and further pointless entrapment by the devil. Instead the believer should already understand that their old self died and was buried with Christ, and themselves now a new creation, a new species which never existed before, has been made alive in Christ. No generational curses exist in the newly created believer.
Stay abiding in Christ (John 15); do not bring back your old self from the dead. Be transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2) so you now think like Jesus and your new Heavenly Father, instead of like Satan, your former father (John 8:44).
We also learn in Exodus that even in the Old Testament, the Lord NEVER visited the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation of those who LOVED Him and kept His commandments.
This program covers the following Scriptures from the Amplified Classic version (AMPC): 1 Timothy 1:1-4, Titus 3:8-9, John 8:31-36, Exodus 20:3-6.

And a very good day to you. This is Pastor Marc Whelan with Touch of God, and we're continuing this series this week on the truth about generational curses. The Lord came to set you free.
As you receive Him as Lord, you become born again and are set free. As you confess Jesus as Lord and believe God raised Him from the dead, Romans chapter 10, verse 9 says, you are saved. Jesus, in Isaiah 61, it says that the Lord came to set the captives free.
He even declared it Himself when He read from the Holy Scriptures. He came to set you free, not to keep you in bondage. The devil's nature of darkness is to keep you with him in darkness, keep you with a mind of carnality, and to keep you thinking that you're forever in chains of bondage of generational curses.
But if you are born again, you have been set free. Now the key is to know it, believe it, accept it, and live free from the thought that you may not be free. I'm speaking to you again, assuming you are born again.
The problems that you may be going through today are not because you have a generational curse or curses. It is because of things that you're continuing to do. Problems of sin.
The answer to your problems is not what your ancestors did. Our answer is always Jesus. Jesus has come to set you free.
If you're having trouble putting down the cigarette, putting down the bottle, turning away from whatever habitual sin you are in, have you invited Jesus into the problem yet? Have you asked Him for help? Have you said, Jesus, I turn from this sin, I turn from my wicked ways, and I face you. Now Lord, help me. Help me get rid of this addiction.
And He won't help you get rid of it. He will rid you of it as you give it to Him. So give your problem to Him, and He will separate the problem from you, and you are then set free.
Now this series is about the truth about generational curses, and one of the most important things for you to do is to listen to these scriptures, listen to these truths, and go to the Holy Spirit yourself to discuss this with the Lord and the Holy Spirit, and say, Lord, is this true? Show me and set me free from this wrong thinking that I still have a generational curse even as a Christian. One of the things that we can suffer from is a lack of truth. When we don't know the truth, and we believe that what we've been taught already on something is the truth without verifying it in scripture, we can live a life thinking that we're living it through the lens of truth, but yet we're living in lies.
We're not committing lies ourselves, but we are living in bondage when Jesus's precious blood has set us free from it all. A minister or someone else, even another Christian in a Bible study group, could have a deep conviction that there is such a thing as a generational curse for the Christian, and if they come across convincing to you, you are at risk of believing a lie. They may say to you, if you have this problem of addictions, then maybe you should look back in your genealogy, maybe you should look back in your ancestor line and see who was smoking, see who was an alcoholic, and we've already gone through in previous weeks that that is pointless.
First of all, because not everybody likes to confess their sins to a family member, so how do you know that you're going to find the person with this addiction? They may never have told a single soul. Then what are you going to do? Well, the good news is you don't have to do that research because it's pointless and futile. Let's see what the apostle Paul said as recorded in 1 Timothy chapter 1 verses 1 to 4. Paul, an apostle, special messenger of Christ Jesus, by appointment and command of God, our Savior, and of Christ Jesus the Messiah, our hope, to Timothy, my true son in the faith, grace, spiritual blessing and favor, mercy and heart peace be yours from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
As I urged you when I was on my way to Macedonia, stay on where you are at Ephesus in order that you may warn and admonish and charge certain individuals not to teach any different doctrine. Now remember in the very beginning of the series we were talking about doctrines of demons. Those are doctrines that are taught by those who haven't renewed their mind to the truth, so they spread what they believe is the truth because it makes sense to them, but it isn't the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
So we have to watch that we're getting a doctrine from the gospel, from the Word of God, and not doctrines from demons or devils. So verse 3, as I urged you when I was on my way to Macedonia, stay on where you are at Ephesus in order that you may warn and admonish and charge certain individuals not to teach any different doctrine. Verse 4, nor to give importance to or occupy themselves with legends, fables, myths, and endless genealogies which foster and promote useless speculations and questionings rather than acceptance in faith of God's administration and the divine training that is in faith in that leaning of the entire human personality on God in absolute trust and confidence.
Verse 5, whereas the object and purpose of our instruction and charge is love which springs from a pure heart and a good clear conscience and sincere unfeigned faith. Also we look in Titus chapter 3 verses 8 to 9. Verse 8, this message is most trustworthy and concerning these things I want you to insist steadfastly so that those who have believed in, trusted in, relied on God may be careful to apply themselves to honorable occupations and to doing good. For such things are not only excellent and right in themselves but they are good and profitable for the people.
Verse 9, but avoid stupid and foolish controversies and genealogies and dissensions and wrangling about the law for they are unprofitable and futile. So we see here that Paul is speaking to Timothy and we also see in Titus both passages are talking against the futility and unprofitability of genealogies, useless speculations and questionings that are fostered by such research and studies and time taken. You see sometimes a person will say well this issue you have is because you are in sin, a personal ongoing habitual sin.
They may well be correct about that but they go wrong when they say you need to find the root cause and that root cause could be a generational curse. So you believe them because you don't know any better. Now don't criticize yourself.
Don't feel bad. Feel good that you are finding out the truth about this. Don't look back.
Just live in today and find out the truth today. Have a relationship with Jesus today in this moment. If you need to turn the radio off to have time with Jesus it's more important to have time with your Lord and Savior than it is to listen to me.
If you're looking for your freedom and answers by looking into your genealogy the devil has already won because he is your problem and not your ancestors. You see it keeps you focused on yourself and your ancestors when the real problem is the devil. Sometimes it could be the devil and other times it is your own lack of understanding in your mind.
You have been agreeing with the devil's lies. They make sense to you. He knows how you think after all.
He sees what happens when he causes something in your life and the way you react to it. He knows your ways. How is it that the devil knows our ways and we don't really know the Lord's as much as we ought? Lord let us seek you with all of our heart and know your ways just like Moses said that he wanted to know your ways.
Lord let us see and experience your ways and know the intent of your heart. The devil's been keeping notes on all of us. He wants to make sure that we never find out about Jesus or if we do and we make Jesus our Lord and confess him as such then his next step is to make sure if at all possible that we don't read the Bible every day.
We do not pray. We do not seek the Lord in a relationship and most of all we don't find out who we are in Christ because when that happens and he knows we understand now that we can cast him out of people, cast his demons out of people, then it's game over for him. Well the good news is that Jesus already destroyed the works of the enemy.
The game is over for the devil but the devil's still trying to play with us every day like he's still in the game. So remind him that Jesus won the victory over him and in Christ you can do all things through Christ and that means you can cast out devils in Jesus's name. Just make sure you get the person saved before you cast the demon out of them.
You don't want those things coming back seven times worse on the person. So he knows our weaknesses and he also suggests and tries to convince you of things even sometimes using scripture. This is why staying away from the Bible or not spending enough time chewing on a verse can leave you a sitting duck.
If the truth shall set you free, what happens when you don't know the truth? That means you're not free. You're trapped and the worst thing is sometimes you don't even see the chains. They're invisible to you.
You may feel a little bit under the weather but you don't know you can be set free by Jesus of anything not of the Lord. Any form of captivity, depression, worry, anxiety, fear, sickness, disease, addictions. The Lord is merciful and graceful and he wants you set free.
My goodness he paid enough for you to be set free. Don't let his suffering be done in vain for you. If we look at John chapter 8 verses 31 to 36.
So Jesus said to those Jews who had believed in him, if you abide in my word, hold fast to my teachings and live in accordance with them, you are truly my disciples. Here's the big verse. Verse 32.
And you will know the truth and the truth will set you free. Verse 33. They answered him, we are Abraham's offspring, descendants and have never been in bondage to anybody.
What do you mean by saying you will be set free? Jesus answered them, I assure you most solemnly, I tell you whoever commits and practices sin is the slave of sin. Now how many of us have committed sin in our lives and had this deception from something that said to us, we can control it before it gets too bad. Sin doesn't control me.
I control sin. I control when I want to drink this or smoke that and it's not all of a sudden. Over time it turns to two drinks, two cigarettes and you know the rest of the story.
So sin is not a slave of us. Jesus of course says here in verse 34, whoever commits and practices sin is the slave of sin. We are the slaves.
But now we're set free, right? Because we received Jesus and he has set us free but we have to seek him and continue to abide in him for him to abide in us. Remember Psalm 91, we're in the shadow of the Almighty. If we choose to be so and if so then no foe can withstand the power that's coming from the Lord and you're inside his shield all the time you decide to remain inside the shadow of the Almighty.
But remember you're not the Lord's robot. You have a free will. Now the Lord wants us to say not my will Lord but yours be done.
But we have a free will choice to even choose. Well to be obedient that's what we should say. Not my will Lord but yours be done.
We are choosing in our free will for his will to be done in our lives. Verse 35, now a slave does not remain in a household permanently forever the son of the house does remain forever. So if the son liberates you makes you free men then you are really and unquestionably free.
And the word son there s-o-n has a capital s which means that's Christ Jesus. If Jesus is the one that liberates you then you are really and unquestionably free. Imagine you're in jail.
Imagine you're in prison in a prison cell and the prison officer comes and unlocks the door and opens the door. He says to you you are really and unquestionably free. You're going to run out of there and rejoice because you'll believe the prison officer.
And then you see the name on the badge of his shirt and it says Jesus. So if you know how to be free by understanding the truth that in Christ walking with the Lord every day spending time with him in prayer praise and worship wouldn't you like to tell others how to be set free too? Jesus doesn't want you to keep his victory to yourself and your testimony to yourself and by doing so by telling everybody about the Lord and them seeing a difference in your life and sharing your testimony to them you'll be reaping the benefits of sowing and reaping. If you sow good you will be reaping good.
If you sow healing you will reap healing. If you're not well if you have an ache if you have cancer then lay hands on the sick and you will reap healing. If you don't get it any other way in the meantime by trusting in the Lord and just opening up and receiving what the Lord has already paid through the stripes on his body if you lay hands on the sick they shall recover and if they shall recover that's what you sowed you're going to reap laying hands you're going to reap recovery in the name of Jesus so be it.
So let's have a refresher to remind us of two really important scriptures to help you remember when the thought comes to you in the future about whether this thing in your life is a generational curse and you may have forgotten most of this teaching if you have not been studying the word as much as you ought so this is a refresher because these two verses can help you stay free in your understanding of the truth of what Jesus had done for you. In the old testament and the new testament we have one verse in each so let's start with the old testament numbers chapter 23 verse 8 remember it's Balaam and he's talking to Balak and he says to Balak how can I curse those God has not cursed or how can I violently denounce those the Lord has not denounced that means that God has not cursed you then you cannot be the second part of this is in the new testament Ephesians chapter 1 verse 3 this is the apostle Paul writing to the church at Ephesus and he says may blessing praise laudation and eulogy be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ the Messiah who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual given by the Holy Spirit blessing in the heavenly realm so if we have been blessed by the Lord with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realm then we have not been cursed the scripture doesn't say that we have received any curse from the Lord at all we have only received blessing and that is every spiritual blessing not one but every one the Lord can give he has given and blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realm well it's in the heavenly realm where are we today we are seated in Christ if we are a believer of the Lord we confess him as Lord we are in Christ and he is seated in heavenly places right next to the Father so those spiritual blessings are where we are and we are where those spiritual blessings are in the heavenly realm and that is in Christ remember the verse here says that God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ the Messiah who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual given by the Holy Spirit blessing in the heavenly realm so are you in Christ today we've shared a teaching on that before if you are born again if you receive Jesus as Lord confess him as Lord believe that God raised him from the dead Romans chapter 10 verse 9 says you are saved Romans chapter 10 verse 13 says for everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord invoking him as Lord will be saved you see we are not cursed God has not cursed us the curse was put upon Jesus even when he did not deserve for the curse to be put on him he bore the curse and now because he was cursed we are accepted because he took upon himself our cursing now we live in his blessing remember that all the promises of God are in Christ yes and in Christ amen the promises of God are not the curses of God let's go back to the Old Testament Exodus chapter 20 verses 3 to 6 in the amplified classic version now this is the Lord speaking through Moses and he says you shall have no other gods before or besides me verse 4 you shall not make yourself any graven image to worship it or any likeness of anything that is in the heavens above or that is in the earth beneath or that is in the water under the earth verse 5 you shall not bow down yourself to them or serve them for I the Lord your God am a jealous God visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me focus in on those words third and fourth generation of those who hate me verse 6 but showing mercy and steadfast love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments let's do those again verse 5 this is really important for us to understand and understand the nature of the Lord's heart verse 5 says you shall not bow down yourself to them or serve them who is them it's the things he explained in verse 3 and 4 no other gods before or besides me and you shall not make yourself any graven images to worship it or any likeness of anything that is in the heavens above or that is in the earth beneath or that is in the water under the earth those are the things he's about to talk about you shall not bow down yourself to them or serve them for I the Lord your God am a jealous God visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me but showing mercy and steadfast love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments how many times do you hear people talk about verse 5 but they don't continue into verse 6 where he says but showing mercy and steadfast love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments it's important that you read verse 6 it's a complete opposite of what happens if you hate the Lord in verse 5 so this means that if you love God the iniquities would not be passed down through to the third and fourth generation now this is the old testament now you're a new creation now you don't even have to think about this but just imagine if you were living in old testament times if you loved the Lord and kept his commandments even in the old testament before Christ the Lord in his mercy and steadfast love he would not put a curse on you so the question we must always ask ourselves is as for me and my house am I are we serving the Lord in this house check yourself we're supposed to check ourselves daily holy spirit reveal the intent of my heart expose any wickedness expose any sin that I need to repent of and ask the Lord for forgiveness of Lord help me become more rigorous in my walk with you Lord help me convict me when I have a lack of self-discipline give me strength in the area of my discipline in Jesus name we will leave it there today and we're going to continue with exodus chapter 34 verses six to seven next week so hopefully today this is yet another series of scriptures and truths that is helping you understand the nature of the Lord and how we as Christians cannot be attacked or associated or assigned a generational curse we have the ability through the power and grace of God to turn 180 degrees from sin from wickedness to the Lord and he will save us from our sin Lord we thank you today we bless you for delivering us from bondage we bless your holy name and we thank you Lord that your word today is sealed in our hearts that we will understand and meditate on this truth and Lord let your precious souls listening to this program today go back to the Bible and go to your holy spirit and really contemplate and meditate on this truth day and night according to Psalm 1 chapter 1 and 2 in Jesus name amen and before I leave the Lord be with you the Lord let his face shine upon you you are healed by his stripes you were healed you are cancer free you are sickness free you are disease free you are pain free you have the life of Christ in you and I speak it by faith in Jesus name amen all right if you'd like us to pray for you our website is at touchofgod.world and you can click on send prayer request we would love to hear from you so until next week you have a blessed week amen
