The Truth About Generational Curses (Pt.6) (302) – June 14 2025
"How can I curse those God has not cursed? Or how can I [violently] denounce those the Lord has not denounced?", so says Balaam to Balak as recorded in Numbers 23:8 (AMPC). God has given the believer every spiritual blessing in Heavenly places. You cannot be cursed and blessed at the same time. Therefore the believer in Christ cannot have a generational curse, even if he or she had one before receiving Jesus as Lord. The believer in Christ IS set free from all generational curses and can never be attacked or connected to one in the future.
We also discuss the power of our tongues that are able to bring borth blessing and cursing according to James 3:10.
This program covers the following Scriptures from the Amplified Classic version (AMPC): Numbers 23:8, 2 Corinthians 5:17, John 3:1-5, Ephesians 1:3, Galatians 3:13, Deuteronomy 21:22-23, Galatians 3:14, Ephesians 1:5, James 3:10, 2 Corinthians 10:5-6.
(Transcribed by TurboScribe.ai. Go Unlimited to remove this message.) And a very good day, this is Pastor Marc Whelan with Touch of God. We're continuing the series on the truth about generational curses. And remember last week, we were talking about Numbers chapter 23, verses 1 to 12, and it was the story of Balaam and Balak. And Balak wanted Balaam to curse the children of Israel. And every time he wanted him to do that, Balaam went to the Lord, and the Lord filled Balaam's mouth, and Balaam responded to Balak. And Balaam was obedient to the Lord, he did not curse the children of Israel. But one of the things he said to Balak was in verse 8 of Numbers 23, and he said, How can I curse those God has not cursed? Or how can I violently denounce those the Lord has not denounced? Now, if you know the Lord to any degree, his nature, his character, his love, his long-suffering, his patience, his holiness, his righteousness, you know that he would never want to curse you. He does not take delight in punishing anyone to the extent that he sent his only begotten Son to punish his son Jesus in our place for those of us who receive Jesus as Lord. If we never receive Jesus as Lord, the Bible says that the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience. The sons of disobedience are those who never received Jesus as their Lord. They stay under the powers of darkness because they decided to reject Jesus. They continue to believe the lies and decide not to find out the truth for themselves or reject those who tell them the truth and tell them about the gospel. They reject the gospel, they reject the good news and stay living the bad news, the lies, the darkness, and stay entrapped in chains of bondage of different kinds in this sinful, fallen world. But worse than that, they are in this sinful, fallen world like the rest of us, but those who reject Christ stay in darkness even when they have a way of escape by Jesus' precious shed blood and free gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord, becoming born again. Balaam stood for the Lord and Balak wanted Balaam to speak curses instead of blessings upon the children of Israel. So we know that what you say is very powerful. You can use your tongue for blessings and cursing. So if God has not cursed me, I am not cursed. My grandfather may have been cursed, but being born again, I am a new creation. I am no longer cursed. So if God has not cursed you, you are not cursed. Let's just say my grandfather, he may have been cursed, but that doesn't mean I am if I am born again. I am a new creation. I am no longer cursed even if I was because of my grandfather. When I was not born again, I was from Adam's generation. You recall Adam and Eve, from the lineage of Adam and Eve. Now that I am born again, I am no longer from Adam's generation, but I'm from the generation of Jesus. I am born again. 2 Corinthians 5.17 Therefore, if any person is engrafted in Christ the Messiah, he is a new creation, a new creature altogether. The old previous moral and spiritual condition has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come. So this verse says that there was a previous moral and spiritual condition that you and I had before we came and confessed Jesus as Lord and received him as Lord. We were a fallen creation, and now we are a new creature altogether in Christ. What does this mean? In John chapter 3, we see the conversation with Jesus and Nicodemus. Verse 1. Now there was a certain man among the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler, a leader, and authority among the Jews, who came to Jesus at night and said to him, Rabbi, we know and are certain that you have come from God as a teacher, for no one can do these signs, these wonder works, these miracles, and produce the proofs that you do unless God is with him. Verse 3. Jesus answered him, I assure you, most solemnly, I tell you that unless a person is born again and knew from above he cannot ever see, know, be acquainted with, and experience the kingdom of God. Verse 4. Nicodemus said to him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter his mother's womb again and be born? Jesus answered, I assure you, most solemnly, I tell you, unless a man is born of water and even the Spirit, he cannot ever enter the kingdom of God. The word Spirit there has a capital S. That's the Spirit of God. Verse 6. What is born of from the flesh is flesh, of the physical is physical, and what is born of the Spirit is Spirit. Verse 7. Marvel not, do not be surprised, astonished at my telling you, you must all be born anew from above. The wind blows, breathes where it wills, and though you hear its sound, yet you neither know where it comes from nor where it is going. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. When you become born again, you know what I mean, you feel new. You may still think and believe the way you used to, and that begins to change when you decide to commit your studying to the word of God and determine the truth. But your heart starts to change. You feel different. A weight lifts off of your shoulders. As you commit your life and practice seeking the Lord every day, spending time with him in the secret place, things are not the same and you feel better than you used to, compared to when you did not know the Lord. The born-again believer is brand new in Christ. Any problems you still have is because of what you believe. The devil has influence in the carnal part of the mind. That's the mind that we've all grown up with, believing what our parents have told us, if they didn't know the truth of the word. Even a minister might have told us in a church when we were a child. Maybe that minister was not renewed in their mind and they were teaching from a perspective of their carnal understanding, not properly researching the word of God and hearing what the Holy Spirit was teaching them. Maybe it's people in the world teaching us as we're growing up, as we're vulnerable, because we have innocent hearts, so to speak, when we're children growing up. And whoever tells us something, we tend to believe them, because why would we disbelieve them? We do that at our peril. But we don't know until we get a little older, then maybe we shouldn't trust everything everyone tells us. So any problems you still have, it's because of what you believe. And your believing may well not be the truth of the word of God. There is a mismatch. There is a difference. And if you're not set free from something, it is because you don't know the truth of that something. You don't know the truth about the fact that you have been set free. And we'll talk about that a little bit later on in the program. So the devil has influence in the carnal part of the mind. The carnal part of your mind is the part that's not renewed to the truth of the word. And before you ever start reading the Bible and believing and accepting it and doing it, your mind is fully carnal. There's no part of your mind that is renewed. It's fully carnal. And as you read the word of God, it becomes less carnal and more renewed. And Romans chapter 12 verse 2 says that we are transformed as we renew our mind. And we renew our mind by reading the word of God and accepting it and doing it. So the devil still is able to influence you in the carnal part of your mind. And you don't necessarily know that he's involved in that. That's part of his trickery and deception. He never wants to advertise to you that he's responsible for keeping you in bondage. In fact, he goes one step further and he tries to convince you through different conversations you have with other people that don't know the truth, that it's actually God's fault that your life is what it is. So the enemy still has a foothold in your thinking all the time you don't change your thinking. But you have the ability to go from a mind of carnality to a Christ-like mind by reading, believing, and then doing his word. So we need to become born again to be set free from any generational curses. Any that we may have had before we made Jesus our Lord. Ephesians chapter 1 verse 3 says, May blessing, praise, laudation, and eulogy be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Messiah, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual given by the Holy Spirit, blessing in the heavenly realm. He has blessed us. So you see, the Lord has blessed us in heavenly places in Christ. You cannot be blessed and cursed at the same time. Also remember that there was not one person of the multitudes of people who Jesus healed where Jesus mentioned a generational curse. People refuse to believe the truth. So they need to make up a lie which the devil provides them so that they can continue to live under their curse. It's a justification for them. But they are the ones doing it to themselves and the blood of Christ is in vain for them until they come to him, if they ever do. Jesus bore the curse for us. We're not bearing a curse if we have received Jesus. We may have bore a curse before we knew Christ, but now that we are a new creation, Jesus has bore the curse for us and we now have been accepted by the Lord and receive his blessings. Galatians chapter 3 verse 13 in the Amplified Classic Version, it says, Christ purchased our freedom, redeeming us from the curse, doom of the law, and its condemnation by himself, becoming a curse for us, for it is written in the scriptures, cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree is crucified. And we know from the Bible that someone who hangs on a tree, tree is the word used here, we know it as the cross. So cursed is everyone who hangs on a cross is crucified. And obviously we know Jesus was. Deuteronomy chapter 21 verses 22 to 23, it says, And if a man has committed a sin worthy of death, and he is put to death, and afterward you hang him on a tree, his body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but you shall surely bury him on the same day. For a hanged man is accursed by God. Thus you shall not defile your land, which the Lord your God gives you for an inheritance. So we know that the Lord was not kept on the cross overnight, he was buried that same day. Because he was accursed by his Father, the Lord Jesus took the curse for us, and allowed us to receive every spiritual blessing in heavenly places. Jesus is seated in heavenly places next to the Father, and we are in Christ. We are in him, he is in us. Praise the Lord for the rescue. Praise the Lord for the gift of salvation. Praise the Lord for the stripes of Jesus that we were healed, and we are no longer sick and diseased. Let's accept the blessing and receive it, and say, Lord, you did not suffer in vain for me. I am healed by your stripes. I receive it. I am healed. Now sickness, get out of my body. In Jesus' mighty name. So I speak life into your body today by the way of the Holy Spirit, and the Scriptures and the truth shall set you free. You are healed, you are whole in Christ. In Jesus' name. Amen. Galatians chapter 3, verse 14, it says, To the end that through their receiving Christ Jesus, the blessing promised to Abraham might come upon the Gentiles, so that we through faith might all receive the realization of the promise of the Holy Spirit. Jesus bore this curse for the believer, you and I. There is no curse left. He took all the curse out of me and you, and instead he put all his blessings in me and you. However, this is for nothing unless you believe this truth, accept it, and live it. Out of the abundance of your heart your mouth speaks. What do you hear yourself saying? There are phrases some people say that are all related to death and cursing. They say, this is killing me. This thing's killing me. They say, this will be the death of me. My life is a curse. You see they're sowing curses upon themselves by the way they speak. They're inviting trouble. They're saying, devil come over here. I believe that this is upon me. I believe in this. So you have faith in the enemy more than you have faith in the scriptures of the Lord. You have more faith in darkness than you have in the light. Let that not be true. Let us know more truth and understand that what we used to think is wrong, what we used to say is wrong. We should put a stop to those things that would come out of our mouths. You do not see the spiritual realm with your naked eyes, but your spirit is in the spirit realm. You are the spirit in your body. You have a soul and you live in a body, but you are the spirit. Because you are the spirit and your spirit is in the spirit realm, you are in the spirit realm. You just happen to have a body in the physical one. You don't want to be speaking death upon yourself or curses upon yourself because you don't know what you're causing in the invisible realm that you cannot see. Your spirit is out there in the spirit realm. There's evil in the invisible realm and there's goodness in the invisible realm. Which side of the fence are you in the spirit realm? When you speak these things, be careful what you say. There's life and death in the power of the tongue. Proverbs chapter 18 verse 21. So you need to say, I am blessed of the Lord because he has given unto me every spiritual blessing in heavenly places. I am not cursed. My Lord was cursed so that I may be accepted and I may receive every spiritual blessing in heavenly places. So no evil shall befall me. Nothing shall by any means harm me or hurt me. According to Luke chapter 10 verse 19. Also remember that you can stay free by doing things that please the Lord. If you're about your heavenly Father's business, doing good for others, sowing good, you will receive good. So praying, receive prayer from others. So laying hands on the sick, receive healing. So casting out demons from people after winning them to the Lord. Receive deliverance from anything still bothering you. Part of sowing and reaping is believing a lie. If you don't understand the truth, then you are susceptible to speak what you think is the truth, but it's actually a lie. One of the problems here is that you continue to live what you believe. So you're walking in darkness, not in the truth of the light of Christ. And worst is you tell other people what you believe, and now you're reinforcing the enemy stronghold in their thinking because they believe what you're saying is the truth, but they haven't spent time in the word or with the Lord to find out that what you're telling them is actually wrong. So now you have your friends and your family in bondage, and the enemy's just continuing to use you, and sometimes he doesn't even have to convince you. You already know this lie from years and years of not understanding the truth. So be careful what you tell others unless it lines up with the word of God. This is what we need to be preaching and teaching, the gospel of Jesus Christ, Jesus who came to set the captives free and offer us the free gift of eternal life, to renew our minds, to be set free from the lies that we have lived and understood for so long in our lives. But now we are set free from it to the degree that we decide to find out what the truth is and accept it and do it. Ephesians 1, verse 5, it says, For he foreordained us, destined us, planned in love for us, to be adopted, revealed as his own children through Jesus Christ, in accordance with the purpose of his will, because it pleased him and was his kind intent. Do you remember at the beginning of the program we talked about knowing the nature of the Lord? This is an example here, because we know his will, we know that he has a kind intent, it's his nature. Yes, he's righteous, he has wrath, but he wanted to place his wrath upon his son for those who would believe in his son and leave his wrath for those who don't want to believe in his son, Jesus, and continue to reject him. Those people are called the sons of disobedience. They're continuing to reject Christ and are disobedient in the way that they have hostile minds that are carnal, and those carnal minds are at enmity with God. They are at war with the Lord. The Lord through his own heart and his love in the way he is because of his love gave his only begotten son in the face of all of us sinning in his face while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. Even though the Lord hears the sinful hearts and the thoughts and the wickedness of all of us, the Lord still went through with the sacrifice at the cross and the persecution because of his love. James chapter 3 verse 10 says, Out of the same mouth come forth blessing and cursing. These things, my brethren, ought not to be so. So we have to guard our thoughts, our words, and our actions. 2 Corinthians chapter 10 verse 5 to 6, it says, Inasmuch as we refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the true knowledge of God, and we lead every thought and purpose away, captive into the obedience of Christ the Messiah, the anointed one, being in readiness to punish every insubordinate for his disobedience, when your own submission and obedience as a church are fully secured and complete. I want to just spend just a minute on the first of these two verses. Verse 5, we are supposed to lead every thought and purpose away, captive into the obedience of Christ. We are to know the truth of the word of God. When we know the truth, we can spot a lie. When we hear a lie, we know it's a lie. We know it's not the truth because we know differently now. Remember that if you are practicing your problem, you are creating a pattern of continuing habitual sin. Problems may have started with your ancestors if we chose to act like them, but you are now a believer. We need to act like Jesus because we are brand new. We should not impersonate the man or woman that we used to be because we are no longer that person. That person died. We are now alive in Christ, a brand new creation. Let's act who we are and know that if you had a generational curse before you came to Jesus, you no longer have one now that you are a new creation. It is impossible to be blessed and cursed at the same time. And the Lord has blessed you as a believer with every spiritual blessing in heavenly places. You are free by the blood of the lamb, the word of your testimony. You are set free by the truth of the word of God and the blood of Jesus has washed your sins away. As you confess your sins to the Lord, he forgives you of your sins and cleanses you of all unrighteousness. And there is no generational curse on you today if you are a believer in Jesus Christ. Stay with the Lord. Do not depart from his presence. Stay seeking him daily, in his word, in the secret place. And if you find yourself saying, well yes, but why do I have this problem? If it's a habitual sin, declare it to the Lord. Stop doing it. You have the ability to say no and trust that the Lord's grace is more than sufficient to deliver you from that habitual sin. You just need to want to not do it anymore. You need to get to the point where you're rejecting sin out of your obedience to Jesus and the temptations will diminish as you seek the Lord with all your heart and get into his presence. He has not forsaken you. Let us not forsake him. Amen.
