The Truth About Generational Curses (Pt.5) (301) – June 7 2025
Proverbs 26 verse 2 shows us that an unjustified curse will not affect its target. The verse gives us the imagery of birds flying by to illustrate that an undeserved curse does not settle on its intended victim. God's justice ensures that curses without merit do not harm the innocent, emphasizing the importance of living righteously and avoiding actions that might invite curses. This concept provides comfort to those facing unjust accusations or curses, reminding them that such curses are ineffective if they remain blameless.
If the born again believer in Christ understands and believes in the variety of scripture that shows God’s divine protection for those that seek Him, then nothing shall by any means hurt that person. (see Luke 10:19). Where the believer runs into trouble is when he or she believes that generational curses can still connect to them and affect them. It is like anything in the Bible. It only comes true for the person reading, when that person finds out the truth and then decides to believe in it, taking every thought captive in obedience to Christ, and rejecting any false teachings, including on this topic of generational curses.
Any problem for the believer is not a generational curse, but their own actions. God has provided a way of escape from sin through trusting and leaning on His Son Jesus, being cleansed of sin and being set free FROM it after the believer confesses his or her sins. The believer simply needs to – believe – the scriptures that reveal the truth that they are set free by the finished works of Christ, repent (turn from) their sinful ways and actions and walk with Jesus with a heart of purity to the best of their ability.
We also consider that the life of the believer is not necessarily a life guaranteed free of committing sin. It is extremely unlikely for a truly born again believer to desire habitual sin, since the heart of the Christian is going through a continual process of sanctification. However that does not mean sin does not occur, albeit hopefully with a sorrowful and repentant heart. How quickly the believer repents is the difference between one with a heart after Jesus, and one who is not trying to keep themselves unstained by the world. For the one with their heart focused on and seeking the Lord, that abiding with Jesus and the fellowship in the secret place ensures the continual divine protection from generational curses, and other evils from the powers of darkness and the enemies therein. (see Psalm 91:1-2 AMPC).
This program covers the following Scriptures from the Amplified Classic version (AMPC): Romans 3:23, John 3:3-7, Romans 5:1, 2 Corinthians 5:21, Ephesians 1:13-14, Romans 8:9, 2 Corinthians 5:17, Galatians 5:17, Romans 7:14-25, 1 John 1:8-10, Philippians 1:6, 1 John 3:2, Romans 5:19, Philippians 3:9, Romans 8:1, 1 John 1:9, Romans 8:13, Galatians 5:16, Romans 8:30, 1 Corinthians 15:49-53, Romans 8:38-39, Proverbs 26:2, Psalm 91:1-2, 1 Peter 5:7-8, Mark 4:18-19, Numbers 23:1-12.
And a very good day, this is Pastor Marc Whelan with Touch of God and we are continuing this week with the series on the truth about generational curses. Now recently in this series we have been seeing in Scripture that the born-again believer has been set free from sin by Christ from curses and has been set free from sin by Christ and his shed blood on the cross. Because of being set free and we know in Scripture we are a new creation, the believer can no longer be cursed. The believer is a brand new creation set free from under the powers of darkness, moved and transferred, translated by God at the moment the believer decides to make a decision for Jesus, receives Jesus as their Lord. From then onwards the Lord takes them from out of the clutches of the powers of darkness where generational curses exist. This means that a believer who has a relationship with Jesus cannot have a generational curse. However some of us still ask this question, what if I still sin even after becoming born again? For a moment let us ask the question, what does falling short of the glory of God mean? The phrase comes from Romans chapter 3 verse 23 in the New Testament. It says since all have sinned and are falling short of the honor and glory which God bestows and receives. Now you can see here the word all, A-L-L, since all have sinned. No one is excluded from all. All is all. So in context here Paul is explaining that all people, Jew and Gentile, are sinners by nature and action, failing to meet God's perfect standard of righteousness, His glory. This falling short results in separation from God and the need for salvation. So let's look at what happens when you are born again. Being born again, John chapter 3 verse 3 to 7 refers to a spiritual regeneration where through faith in Jesus Christ a person is justified, declared righteous by Christ's atoning sacrifice according to Romans chapter 5 verse 1 and 2nd Corinthians chapter 5 verse 21. That person receives the Holy Spirit who indwells and empowers them according to Ephesians chapter 1 verses 13 to 14 and Romans chapter 8 verse 9 and also becomes a new creation. 2nd Corinthians chapter 5 verse 17 with a transformed heart and a new nature oriented towards God. However, while the penalty of sin is removed, which is what justification means, the penalty of sin having been removed, the presence of sin remains in the believer's life. The born-again Christian still has a sinful nature, this is called the flesh, that battles against the Spirit according to Galatians chapter 5 verse 17, Romans chapter 7 verses 14 to 25 depending on your interpretation. The third thing we have to ask is do born-again Christians still fall short? The answer is yes, born-again Christians still fall short of God's glory in the sense that they continue to sin and remain imperfect. Even regenerate believers stumble and fail to live perfectly according to God's holy standard. In the passage of 1st John chapter 1 verse 8 to 10 it refers to the words, if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves. So no Christian achieves sinless perfection in this life. The other issue is the believer remains imperfect, not perfect. The process of sanctification, growing in holiness, is ongoing. It's not instant at the moment we give our life to Jesus. It is a process of sanctification and believers won't be fully conformed to Christ's image until glorification at Christ's return according to Philippians chapter 1 verse 6 and 1st John chapter 3 verse 2. However, there is a critical distinction positionally and practically. Let's talk about positionally first. Positionally, born-again Christians are no longer condemned for falling short. Through Christ's righteousness imputed to them, Romans chapter 5 verse 19 and Philippians chapter 3 verse 9, they are justified and accepted by God. Romans chapter 8 verse 1 declares, there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, for those who walk according to the Spirit and not according to the flesh. And then there's practically. Practically, believers still fall short in their daily lives as they sin and fail to fully reflect God's glory until they are glorified. The hope for born-again believers is that while you still fall short in your present experience, the gospel assures you of three things. Forgiveness, empowerment and future glory. Forgiveness, when you sin, confessing to God brings forgiveness and cleansing according to 1st John chapter 1 verse 9, which we've spoken about many times on this broadcast. Empowerment, the Holy Spirit enables you to grow in holiness and resist sin according to Romans chapter 8 verse 13 and Galatians chapter 5 verse 16. And future glory, one day you will be fully transformed, no longer falling short and will perfectly reflect God's glory according to Romans chapter 8 verse 30 and 1st Corinthians chapter 15 verses 49 to 53. So to conclude, yes, as a born-again Christian you still fall short of the glory of God in your daily life because you continue to sin and are not yet perfected. However, through Christ's finished work you are justified and your shortcomings do not separate you from God's love or salvation according to Romans chapter 8 verse 38 to 39. You are being sanctified now and will one day be glorified, fully reflecting God's glory. Why did we talk about this? It is because even if you are born again, you can still tend to sin inadvertently. If you have a relationship with Jesus Christ, you are less likely to sin and invite the enemy in. You need not concern yourself that you're going to be attacked by a generational curse, but you must remain in a relationship with Jesus. You are a brand new creation, now be who you now are. Proverbs chapter 26 verse 2, it says, like the sparrow in her wandering, like the swallow in her flying, so the causeless curse does not alight. This phrase, so the causeless curse does not alight, suggests that an unjustified curse will not affect its target. This idea is supported by various interpretations of Proverbs chapter 26 which uses the imagery of birds flying by to illustrate that an undeserved curse does not settle on its intended victim. According to religious teachings, God's justice ensures that curses without merit do not harm the innocent, emphasizing the importance of living righteously and avoiding actions that might invite curses. This concept provides comfort to those facing unjust accusations or curses, reminding them that such curses are ineffective if they remain blameless. And there's the key. Are you blameless today? Have you and I slipped up in sin this week? If we have, we need to immediately go to the Lord and ask Him to wash us again with His blood. Wash us again white as snow. Confess your sins according to 1st John chapter 1 verse 9 to the Lord and He is faithful and righteous to forgive you your sins and to cleanse you of all unrighteousness. So stay cleansed. If you fall into sin, if you slip, immediately go to the Lord and get cleansed once more. Do not go deeper into sin, but even if you are deep in sin, Jesus has a long arm and can reach you and can rescue you only if you want to be delivered. It is your free will. The Lord wants you cleansed. He wants you free. Now once you are free, stay free. If you slip one day, the Lord does not like sin at all, but He is faithful to forgive you of your sins as soon as you confess them to Him. Do not wallow or have self-pity for your sins. You're only wasting another hour in condemnation in your day. The Lord has work for us to do. We need to preach this gospel. He wants to flow through us. He wants to have His Spirit flow in power through us. He wants us to be praying. He wants us to walk in right standing with Him. He wants us to be upright. He wants us to be holy as He is holy. So if you slip, get up right away and seek the Lord and ask for His forgiveness. Confess your sins and He will cleanse you and continue on. In summary, an undeserved curse lacks the power to impact its intended target due to divine protection and the inherent nature of justice. Now you see here the words divine protection. If you are divinely protected, a curse cannot land on you, especially an undeserved one. If we look at Psalm 91, we know even in the Old Testament we can receive protection from the Lord. Divine protection. You know these verses very well. In the Amplified Classic Version, verse 1 says, He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall remain stable and fixed under the shadow of the Almighty whose power no foe can withstand. That's just like saying no enemy can get anywhere near you if you have a relationship with the Lord, are in His secret place seeking Him with all of your heart, soul, and mind every day. The enemy wants to curse us but we are new creations now. We are a child of God. We need to continue in the relationship with Jesus, remain with Him, abide in Him, according to John chapter 15, and He will abide in us. Verse 2 says, I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God. On Him I lean and rely and in Him I confidently trust. How can a generational curse consume you or attack you if you are under the shadow of the Almighty where no foe can withstand His power? So it all depends on if you are walking with the Lord or walking with the world, which means you're walking in darkness and have not yet surrendered your soul and your heart to the Lord. So a curse cannot be on someone unless there is a reason. For a soul that is not yet born again, they are already in sin. They have not been set free from it yet because they are still walking in the world and with the world. Therefore the devil has an open door when we are in sin. We give the devil an opportunity. For example, when you are in strife with someone. This next point is very important for you to understand. I want you to get hold of this truth. It is all to do with what you believe. When believing in generational curses, that a generational curse can attack you even if you are born again, which is a lie that we have proved, if you still believe that it can happen, that is giving the devil an open door and an opportunity because the devil can say to you that any problem you're going through is because you have a generational curse. You then believe by faith in that lie and it falsely explains and you're able to conclude incorrectly that you have a generational curse and that that is what's causing your problems. Really, the problems are because of your own actions, not because you have been attacked by some generational curse. And again, I'm talking to believers. If you are still yet deciding whether you want to receive Jesus as Lord, you are still in darkness precious soul and I implore you to make a decision for Jesus to receive his forgiveness and start anew. Become transformed by reading the Bible and becoming who God created you to be. Being set free by Jesus from sin, from sickness and disease, from generational curses, if you have any. But this point here about believing in generational curses should not apply to the Christian. This is why we are teaching on this series. We should not as Christians still be believing that a generational curse is possible even for us. It is a lie from the enemy. It's doctrines of demons. 1st Peter chapter 5 verse 7 says, Casting the whole of your care, all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns once and for all on him. For he cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully. Peter is talking about Jesus here. In this verse we see the word cares, cares for you affectionately, cares about you watchfully. Care in the Strong's Concordance is 3308. It means merender. Every solicitation to be distracted by the devil. So a care needs to be cast on the Lord. Care is a concern, an issue, a distraction by the enemy. Care is not a good thing. Care is an issue. You have a concern, a care, a worry, a fear, anxiety, all of those things. You've got to cast those things on the Lord. Get rid of them. Trust him with your concerns. For the Lord can be trusted. He is the most trustworthy of all existence. 1st Peter chapter 5 verse 8. Be well-balanced, temperate, sober of mind. Be vigilant and cautious at all times. For that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around like a lion roaring in fierce hunger, seeking someone to seize upon and devour. Brothers and sisters, we have to be watchful. Stay prayed up with the Lord. Allow the Holy Spirit to reveal to you circumstances going on in your life, people that are asking too many questions. If somebody wants to know a lot about your life, do not reveal everything about yourself to them, unless you come to know them over time and you can fully trust them and make sure that they are born again and the intent of their heart is a righteous one. There is no ulterior motive behind them asking all these questions. Do not reveal things you do not need to reveal to anyone. Mark chapter 4 speaks to distractions that take us away from the Word. We know the parable of the sower. In verse 18 of Mark chapter 4, Jesus says, And the ones sown among the thorns are others who hear the word, then the cares and anxieties of the world and distractions of the age and the pleasure and delight and false glamour and deceitfulness of riches and the craving and passionate desire for other things creep in and choke and suffocate the word and it becomes fruitless. There's no fruit. So the cares and the anxieties that we have from the world we need to cast upon the Lord so that there are no thorns when the seed of the Word of God comes into our heart and it can go deeper and it can become fruitful. We need to get rid of these anxieties and distractions, the worries, the fears, because that is only saying, I do not trust the Lord to get me out of this situation. The Lord is faithful. He is good. He loves you. He has only ever done good for you and he continues to love you and to care about you watchfully and affectionately according to 1st Peter chapter 5 verse 7. So ask the Holy Spirit today and this coming week. Holy Spirit, please reveal the thorns that are getting in the way of your Word penetrating the depth of my heart such that I would be transformed and I would be able to consider your Word, contemplate, meditate on your Word day and night according to Psalm chapter 1 verses 1 and 2. Lord let your Word seep into my heart and let my mouth speak your holy scriptures. So you see from 1st Peter chapter 5 verses 7 and 8 as well as Mark 4 that we need to cast these cares upon the Lord, get rid of the thorns and distractions will not get the better of us, but we have to be mindful every day what distraction is creeping in under the crack of the door. The door is not flung wide open. Remember in Genesis chapter 3 that the devil in the form of the serpent was crafty. So why are you not under a generational curse as a born-again believer? The first thing is the problem is not a generational curse. The problem is your actions. But let's see what happens in Numbers chapter 23 verses 1 to 12. We have the story of Balaam and Balak. Verse 1 says, And Balaam said to Balak, Build me here seven altars and prepare me here seven oxen and seven rams. And Balak did as Balaam had spoken and Balak and Balaam offered on each altar a bull and a ram. And Balaam said to Balak, Stand by your burnt offering and I will go. Perhaps the Lord will come to meet me and whatever he shows me I will tell you. And he went to a bare height. Verse 4, God met Balaam who said to him, that means Balaam is now going to say something to God. He says to God, I have prepared seven altars and I have offered on each altar a bull and a ram. Verse 5, And the Lord put a speech in Balaam's mouth and said, Return to Balak and thus shall you speak. Verse 6, Balaam returned to Balak who was standing by his burnt sacrifice, he and all the princes of Moab. Balaam took up his figurative speech and said, Balak the king of Moab has brought me from Aram out of the mountains of the east saying, Come curse Jacob for me and come violently denounce Israel. Verse 8, How can I curse those God has not cursed? Or how can I violently denounce those the Lord has not denounced? So make a note of Numbers 23 verse 8. Numbers 23 verse 8 where Balaam says to Balak, and these are the words that the Lord had put in Balaam's mouth to speak to Balak. So the Lord himself in the Lord's heart he wanted Balaam to say these words, How can I curse those God has not cursed? Or how can I violently denounce those the Lord has not denounced? This means that the Lord had not cursed or denounced the children of Israel and neither has he denounced or cursed you if you are born again. If you are a Christian in right relationship with the Lord, having a relationship with Jesus Christ, the Lord has not cursed you, he has blessed you. And we have been speaking about the blessings of the Lord several weeks ago. So if the Lord has blessed you, he has not and cannot curse you. And we'll be going more into this in the next couple of weeks. But today I want you to focus on the blessings of the Lord. The fact that he has not cursed the children of Israel and nor has he cursed you and I, the Jews or the Gentiles. So therefore he has not cursed us and therefore we are blessed. So no generational curse can connect to a Christian who is in right relationship with the Lord. The Christian is set free from sin, from sickness and disease, from under the powers of darkness and now we exist in the kingdom of the beloved Son, Jesus Christ. So verse 9 is where Balaam continues to speak. For from the top of the rocks I see Israel and from the hills I behold him. Behold the people of Israel shall dwell alone and shall not be reckoned and esteemed among the nations. Verse 10, who can count the dust, the descendants of Jacob and the number of the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous, those who are upright and in right standing with God and let my last end be like theirs. Verse 11, and Balak said to Balaam, what have you done to me? I brought you to curse my enemies and here you have thoroughly blessed them instead. Verse 12, and Balaam answered, must I not be obedient and speak what the Lord has put in my mouth? So we will end it there today. That was numbers 23 from verses 1 to 12, if you want to read that this week, but particularly verse 8. Realize God has not cursed you, he has blessed you. As you continue to read the Word of God, you will get to understand the Lord's nature and it will make sense. You will get to know him to the point where that you will know that you will know that it would never be in the Lord's heart to curse you. You are precious in his sight. You are fearfully and wonderfully made, brother and sister in Christ. Bless you today. Let me pray Numbers chapter 6 verse 24 to 26 over you before we leave today. The Lord bless you and watch, guard and keep you. The Lord make his face to shine upon and enlighten you and be gracious, kind, merciful and giving favor to you. The Lord lift up his approving countenance upon you and give you peace, tranquility of heart and life continually.
